If you have been keeping up with our blogs, you know that Drafting by Design, Inc has been participating in the ACE Mentoring Program at Hodgson Vo-Tech. As mentioned in our previous article, the students were asked to design a library/community center to meet the following requirements:
- 20,000 to 50,000 Sq. Ft. Library
- 10,000 to 20,000 Sq. Ft. Community Center
They were allowed to include anything they thought is necessary to have in a library. (i.e. computer rooms, designated kid’s area, a silent reading area, etc). In the community center, they were allowed to design anything they thought would be appealing to the public. The main key of the project was to design a library and community center that would be attractive to the community, thus increasing the amount of interest and number of visits to the library and community center. The owner of the project wants to bring the “interest” to libraries once again, to have people, specifically the younger generations, utilize the library.
The students had about twelve weeks to work on the projects. One group out of each school was chosen to present their project at the Annual ACE breakfast, in Wilmington, DE. Neil, President of Drafting by Design, Inc and Tatiana, who was representing Drafting by Design, Inc as one of the mentors for Hodgson Vo-tech, attended the breakfast. At the breakfast, each school, DelCastle Vo-Tech and Hodgson Vo-Tech, gave their presentation on their projects. After the presentations, scholarships were awarded to different students from each school. For Hodgson, six senior students were awarded $1,000, three juniors and one sophomore got awarded $250 scholarships, each. However, there was a condition in order for the juniors and sophomores to receive their awards. The $250 scholarship award is going to be held until next year; The students who received the award must participate and complete the ACE Mentoring next year and will receive their award their Senior year, along with another scholarship their Senior year, if they get chosen for the award again.
It was a great way to end the ACE mentor program. Tatiana really enjoyed the experience and is looking forward to participate as a mentor again next school year.
